What are all the pipes coming up in the middle of my roof?
Usually they are air vents for your plumbing system. They allow air to enter your drain pipes so the waste water will flow out quickly and completely. They also vent foul smelling air. They must remain unblocked.
Most roofs also have chimneys to vent the heating system, either brick or metal. Many have roof vents to prevent heat build-up in attics and upper floors.
These are in addition to the vents for the plumbing system.
Brick chimneys have metal flashing around all four sides at the base. Roof and plumbing vents have rubber collars and metal, rubber or vinyl flashing. Maryland Roofing Systems will inspect and re-seal all vents as part of any installation.
Often long before a roof needs replacing the rubber boots and flashing sealants on your roof will give out and you will have a leak.
The seals should be inspected every five years and replaced if needed. It's something we do all the time.
