I have a shingle roof. A roofing company wants to put on a new roof over the old one. Is that OK?
You can put one shingle roof over another. Use longer nails and pull up and replace the collars around the plumbing vents. Put them under the new roof.
This will save you the cost and the mess of pulling up the old roof.
The important thing to remember is local building code only allows you to shingle over the old roof one time. The next time you need a roof, both layers of shingle need to be torn up. You are only postponing taking the roof up. Or leaving it to the next owner.
Before you let a roofing company put a new roof over the old, make sure you don't have two roofs up already. A local building inspector has the right to make you take a third roof back up.
