Shingle installations begin with an inspection of the sheathing nailed to the roof trusses. Sheathing is usually 5/8" exterior grade chip board, pictured above. Overlapping strips of roofing felt are then attached to the sheathing. Felt comes in thicknesses measured in pounds. 30 pound felt is twice the thickness of 15 pound felt. Shingles are overlapped and staggered so no edges are

aligned that could allow water to seep through. Shingles are then nailed on top the felt.
